Length for a school dance dress?

we're doing waltzing in school (its actually quite fun) and we have a year end waltz! I'm getting a dress made because i've got a very "picky" fashion sense. I was thinking if i should go for a long dress or a tail dress? will i step on a long dress, or will a short dress not be formal enough! PS: its a pretty formal occasion.
